Oscar,

There are interesting works made by Charlotte Benson, Paul Fremman, Juan Manuel Albala-Bertran and a conference of the World Bank on globalization and disasters with some relevant presentations. Also Rene Hernandez of ECLAC has models. Perhaps it is necesarry to review those works like a first steps.

  Dear Disater Collegues and Friends

My name is Oscar Guevara. I am a Colombian researcher based in the UK who is actually doing some research regarding the Economic Market Distortions on reconstruction processes due to natural disasters. This research is an innovative effort on the comprehension of economic instruments for Disaster Risk Management and its application as financing instruments for reconstruction and recovery.

Catastrophes can lead to severe affectation on markets. However, the consequences of major variations on prices are highly complex. In general, the evidence I am looking for is how the market behaves under exceptional conditions of supply and demand, and how this transactions affects financially the reconstruction processes. It profiles the changes in construction supplies due to shock events (such as crisis, emergencies, disasters and catastrophes), and support future opportunities for the inclusion of economic instruments to support policies and programmes for effective reconstruction processes.

In order to achieve the proposed objectives, I need information regarding variations of selected construction supplies as evidence of the economic impacts of disasters, typically concentrated on the most demanded and or less supplied items and services used on reconstruction ( such as bricks, wood, water, cement, wood, sand, petrol and other types of combustibles /energy sources, labor force).

I really appreciate your attention to this petition. If you have experience or know about sources of information. Comments and suggestions are highly appreciated.

  Best Regards
