Hello Patrick,
You are invited to the Earth Institute's Seminar on Sustainable Development,
this Thursday, February 8, 2007, from 4-6pm in the Satow Room of Lerner
Hall.
Topic: Responses to Disasters
Speaker
Irwin Redlener, M.D., Associate Dean and Director, National Center for
Disaster Preparedness, Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University
Medical Center
When natural hazards, major climatic events, large-scale industrial
accidents, or terrorism cause significant loss of life, destruction of
infrastructure or community disruptions the consequences are termed
disasters. Minimizing the human toll of disasters entails a complex set of
strategies consisting of risk reduction, prevention, mitigation, effective
response and intelligent recovery. Thus, actual response planning and
implementation is an essential, though not exclusive, concept in thinking
about disasters. We will explore the notions of disaster response in this
broader context and discuss how to assess effectiveness of disaster planning
and response for catastrophic events.
Registration Recommended. Please email cciseminar at ei.columbia.edu.
